When to Cut Size, Not the Setup

Recognizing days when the chart idea is sound but conditions demand a smaller footprint.

Some sessions offer clean structure and poor conditions. Spreads widen, news sits on the calendar, or you are already halfway through a daily loss limit. Cutting the idea entirely is not always required—cutting size often is.

Conditions that call for half size

Examples include trading into a scheduled data release, opening into a gap that has not settled, or sitting on two consecutive losses. The setup can remain valid while the environment asks for a smaller footprint.

Write the rule before the session

Impulse cuts feel like weakness; pre-written size bands feel like process. Define in advance when you trade full size, half size, or not at all. Then the decision at the chart is recognition, not negotiation.
